MONTELIMAR, Nicaragua, October 30, 2009 –
Top-seeded Americans Vince Zanzuchi and Kevin
Lynch suffered a surprising loss to Costa Ricans
Marcelo Araya and Jonathan Guevara in the first
day of the Nicaragua Tournament, the last leg of
the 2009 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit.
The Costa Ricans entered the match against USA
following a three-set battle against Nicaragua 1
(Calderon-López) 21-14, 18-21, 15-10. Then they
performed the biggest surprise of Day One by
defeating the USA team by score of 21-15, 21-19.
Now the USA will have to battle for a semi final
berth through the losers bracket in the double
elimination format.
Dominican Republic (Pérez-Recio) had two
victories to stay on course of a semi final
berth by defeating Honduras (Baide-Serrano)
21-15, 21-12 and Costa Rica 1
(Villegas-Villegas) 19-21, 21-16, 15-12. The
Dominican pair now will face Costa Rica 2.
Jamaica (Mark Lewis-Dany Wilson) enjoyed a
perfect day by defeating El Salvador 2
(Francisco Hernández-Rafael Vargas) 21-16, 21-15
and then prevailing against Guatemala (Jorge
Bolaños-Erick Garrido) 16-21, 21-13, 15-11.
Second-seeded Mexico (Aldo
Miramontes-Juan Virgen)
beat El Salvador 1 (Giovanni Medrano-David
Vargas) 21-12, 21-11.
Satuday’ action starts at 9:00 a.m. local time
and will decide the four semi finalists of the
tournament.

The tournaments of the 2009 Circuit started the
continental qualifying process to the Olympic
Games of 2012 in London and also to the XXI
Central American and Caribbean Games of 2010 in
Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.
